With its stunning beaches and riverbanks steeped in rich maritime history, South Shields has been a magnet for summer visitors for as long as people have been drawn to the sea. This route offers walkers and cyclists a snapshot of the area’s heritage, attractions, public art and unique landmarks. From the striking vistas offered beside Trow Rocks, past the rolling dunes of Sandhaven beach, around the bustling harbour and the Tyne Ferry Landing to the famous Customs House… fill your lungs with salty sea air!

This is a full route for walkers and cyclists. A smaller section of the route is suitable for those in wheelchairs and those bringing pushchairs (see section marked in orange).
